The Herbert Lehman Education Fund
Description
The Herbert Lehman Education Fund is a national scholarship program that makes annual
awards to outstanding students who meet rigorous eligibility criteria. Students
who are interested in applying for college or law school scholarships are strongly
encouraged to review eligibility criteria and program descriptions before requesting
or submitting applications.
Herbert Lehman Scholarships, in the amount of $2,000, are usually awarded to students
who are entering college for the first time and who will be attending a a four-year
college as a full-time student. Students who are in their first year of college
may also apply. These scholarships are renewable if the recipient remains in good
academic and social standing and program funds remain available. Awards generally
do not exceed four years.
The Herbert Lehman Education Fund was established in the 1963-1964 academic year.
Initially, the Herbert Lehman scholarships were awarded to help African-American
students attend formerly segregated four-year public colleges and universities in
the South that were opened to them as a result of LDF's litigation successes, and
to increase the number of African Americans in the legal profession, particularly
in the South.
The Fund is named after the former Governor and United States Senator from New York
State, who was also a member of the Board of Directors of the NAACP. LDF chose to
honor Senator Lehman in recognition of his "integrity, persistence and valor
on behalf of numerous civil rights causes."
